Share the Love - February Amazing Student contest

In February parents, teachers and fellow students had an opportunity to nominate deserving students.  Each winning student received a $10 Harkins Gift Card AND a $5 Yogurtini Gift Card.  Here is a little bit about our winners for the Share The Love Amazing Student contest:

  • Austin Huerta is a student athletic trainer at Ironwood. He is a devoted member of the Sports Medicine Team working all 3 season. Student Athletic Trainers often arrive hours before the starts of games and leave well after the games have been completed, their hard work and dedication often go un-noticed by athletes, fans, and coaches. Austin was recently selected by the AIA to help work the State Wrestling Tournament in Prescott, AZ. Austin is the first IHS Student Athletic Trainer to ever be accepted.
  • Michael is a junior IB student who is battling cancer. Even though he is currently undergoing chemotherapy, Michael continues full time in school, never falling behind. He plays with the marching band, and is active in sports and extra curricular clubs. Michael also just completed his Eagle Rank in scouting. And to top it all off, Michael is liked by everyone who meets him!
  • Amanda Sumner always goes above and beyond in everything that she does. Amanda is an awesome student, always willing to help another student out. She keeps up on all of her assignments even with attending the cosmetology program each evening through WestMec. Keep up the good work Amanda!!
  • Joseph Brown, Junior, is in the top choir (excelsis), the volunteer all guys choir (Ironmen), and he is in the cast of the school musical (Copa Cabana). He recently auditioned into the prestigious all-region choir through the Arizona Music Educators Association (with a ridiculously high score of 34 out of a possible 40 on his sight singing). What makes
Joseph so special is that he is completely unassuming and soft spoken: to see him in the halls or in class you would never guess he is as gifted as he is. He is always respectful, responsible, and prepared in all that he does, and he carries himself with a quiet dignity and confidence. He is so strong and vital to our program, that we notice him most on those few occasions that he is absent from rehearsal, as without his solid bass sound the choir sounds and feels incomplete.
  • Freshman Zac Moore from the basketball team this winter season. Zac played hard, showed determination, and always had excellent sportsmanship!

Congratulations to all of our talented students!

If you do not have a Facebook account, you can submit a nomination to the Booster Club e-mail: announcements@ironwoodboosterclub.com You can submit one nomination every day while the contest is going on.

The Bird Results:
Winners will be selected and announced daily, and posted on the Booster Club Facebook page and here.  We’ll also be sending out a weekly recap via e-mail.

ANOTHER GREAT PROGRAM THE IRONWOOD BOOSTER CLUB SPONSORS:

                                                  IRONWOOD READS

*440 students (just over 22% of our student body!) and 49 adults participated in the reading groups on Monday, October 22nd. This is a new record. Most of our 34 discussion groups were led by students.
*The vast majority of the feedback was positive, and more of our students are showing interest in leading discussions for our next Ironwood Reads.

*Our next Ironwood Reads event will be held on April 15th, 2013. We already have some titles and student leaders ready to commit for the spring event.

Steve Richard, Language Arts Department at Ironwood High School expressed a special thanks to many, including the following:
*All the students involved-please congratulate them-it was another solid turnout.
*The discussion leaders and other staff members that attended.
*Any teacher that either offered extra credit or encouraged a student to read a book and participate.
*Ironwood Booster Club for supplying the pizza for our student leaders.

IRONWOOD BOOSTER CLUB IS HONORED TO HELP SUPPORT THIS PROGRAM!

What has Ironwood Booster Club done lately?  Here's a note of thanks for a recent funding request the Booster Club fulfilled:
Just a quick note to thank you for your contribution to sending me and Paula Somers to the Arizona Suicide Prevention Conference last week. We were able to make quite a few contacts for staff trainings on suicide preventions and learn about some free resources, both national and local, that we can utilize to reach our students. It was definitely two days well spent to help Ironwood’s students and parents and we would not have been able to go without your help! Booster club is just one more reason “It’s Just Better Here”.

Jennifer Goldman, Head Guidance Counselor
Ironwood High School

What a privelege to support this need.  Thank you for your kind words Jennifer!

Volunteers are needed for the Booster Club BBQ at the October 12th Varsity Football homegame.  If you are a Booster Club member and can come help between 5:30 and 7:30 pm, please meet at the gate outside the field at 5:30.  This is a great opportunity to help contribute to a organization that provides funds for special requests and needs at Ironwood High School!  Show your support by helping with set up, cashier needs, serving food, flipping burgers or clean up!!
